Sole Proprietorships (Part 2A) – Deciding on a Business Name

This article is the 2nd editorial of a series that Amanda and I will compose in an effort to identify, explain, and/or answer concerns regarding Sole Proprietorships.

We will plan to present (4) separate editorials as listed below:

Part 2A – Deciding on a Business Name

Part 2B – Verifying the Availability of a Business Name

Part 2C – Business Name Statements

Part 2D – Business Name Registration

Of course, we would encourage all questions, insights, thoughts, and commentary as appropriate.

==============================

The purpose and goal of this editorial is to discuss and explain:

  • Deciding on a Business Name

==============================

Deciding on a Business Name?

Obviously, your potential customers and clients need to be able to remember your business name and they also need to be able to find it easily if they are looking for it in a phone book; directory; or online.

  • Incorporate a visual element into your business name.  Generally we are hard-wired to “see” images when we read or hear language, and incorporating a visual element into your business name can be a powerful aid to customers’ memory (and a powerful advertising tool).
  • You want a business name that conveys strength and reliability.
  • Your business name needs to give your potential customers or clients some clues about what you actually do.
  • Include information about what your business does – this allows it easier for potential customers and/or clients to find your business in phone books and directories (both off and online).
  • Keep your business name short – You want a business name that will fit well on a business card, look good displayed on a sign or in an ad, and perhaps even a business name that will serve well as a domain name and show up well in search if you have an online business.  Keeping the name as short as possible will be helpful in this regard.
  • Think about colors when you’re choosing a business name – Colors will be an important component of your business logo and other business promotion materials and your business web site, and colors have strong emotional associations, too.

We wish to thank all of the individuals, professionals, and business owners in advance for their considerations in reading this editorial – we are grateful for your continued support…
