Marketing Book Club

One Business Plan in One Hour – Done and ready to implement!

My cuppa tea break turned into a lengthy conversation with a fellow marketing friend (ekk don’t put two of us in the same room without giving time for discussion…the good thing is…it was time well spent!). Back to work! ~whip~

Well, in 18 minutes I created my Vision, Mission and Values, lets see what the rest of the book guides me through.

Chapter Six – Objectives – How Will You Measure Success?  7 minutes - Done! I have a confession, it did take me 10 minutes!  It amazes me how easy Joe has made this for the short cutters. The most difficult of this exercise was determining how you will measure your objective. For the bookclub, I found this exercise very easy. For OTB Marketing & Design…it required a tad more time :)

Chapter Seven – Facing the Brutal Realities – What are the Big Issues that Must Be Addresses? 10 minutes - Loved this step! Identifying challenges in a business is something I do everyday. I find it more challenging when it is your own business. Again, the bookclub portion was fast and the list of issues was small. The biggest, was attracting more members and getting existing members to engage here on this blog.  I am looking forward to the next step. I am solution driven….my ideas were flowing about how to solve the issues before I even made it to the Chapter Eight.

Chapter Eight – Strategies – What Are the Major Categories of Work to Be Done? 15 minutes - The charts in the book really helped! I was able to complete the task in 15 minutes, but I did review and add a couple tweaks before writing this post. I also called one of OTB Marketing & Design team members (My mother, who is the St. Catharine’s Downtown Studio office manager and a graphic designer)  to go over some of the solutions.   I went over Strategies and Priorities with her, brainstorming. I am a firm believer in those who are going to be doing a portion of the work, need to be in on the planning process. I believe we came up with some great strategies for growth.

Chapter Nine – Priorities – Who Will Do What by When? 10 minutes - WOW! And I am done. The whole business plan is done! I am not saying it was completely easy, it did create a huge to do list, but now I have a plan (not that I didn’t before), however, this one hour, one page business plan challenge stopped me from being to analytical and getting sidetracked in the details! It is more thorough with strategies (what I call action plans) built right in. I can realistically see revising and tweaking ever 3 months and even creating a new 1 page plan every 6 months!

What I liked about this process:

  •  Keeps you focused, (even for those who like me who tend to analyze and then get off topic and do more work than needed)
  •  Great examples – The book tells you how to do the step, than shows examples. For those not taking the “short cut”, there is also great case studies.

What I would change:

  • Believe it or not…NOTHING! I will be recommending this book to all my clients who don’t have a working business plan.

I am still PUMPED! What a productive way to spend a Sunday!
